Hosted by Chelsea Handler, who began the show by wryly thanking Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively for distracting us from more calamitous news, the 30th annual Critics Choice kicked off on Friday afternoon in Santa Monica.
“Conclave,” which tied “Wicked” for most nomination with 11, took home the ceremony’s award for best acting ensemble. Lead actor Ralph Fiennes accepted the honor.
Voting for the Critics Choice Awards took place in early January of this year, with final ballots due just after the show, which had been scheduled for Jan. 12, was postponed because of the Los Angeles wildfires.
With voting long since completed, the winners represent a snapshot of the members’ thinking well before the revelation of “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón’s racist and anti-Muslim tweets badly damaged that film’s awards chances going forward.
In the first 28 years of the Critics Choice Awards’ existence, its Best Picture winner went on to win the top Academy Award 17 times, including the last two years in a row and nine times in the 15 years since the Oscars joined the CCA in having 10 Best Picture nominees.
Last year, of the 18 categories the Oscars and Critics Choice Awards have in common, the CCA winner predicted the Oscar winner nine times and missed nine times. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay were among the categories where the CCA matched the Oscars, while Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Animated Feature and Best Foreign-Language Film were among the categories where they did not match.
The Critics Choice Association is the product of a 2019 merger between two organizations, the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. With more than 570 members, is the largest association of film and television critics and journalists in North America.
